The author (me) is giving the NAS away to a lucky reader. Scroll down to the bottom of the blog to see the details on the Giveaway! The NAS is working geat, its a shame I cant use plex on the NAS, but I did not know I could remove it from my NAS and install it on my media devices and still see the NAS. Did not even think of that, even though it seems so simple, just remove it from the NAS LOL. May 28, 2020 The following spreadsheet provides information about compatible NAS devices as well as basic capability information. Nord vpn deal. View Plex NAS Compatibility Guide. Hope this is the correct sub-forum, if not please move.
Ok, here is my deal. I currently use an HP MediaSmart Server that is getting way past it's prime and I'm looking for new options.
Main needs/wants:
1. Remote access of files
2. Remote access of media (music, videos, pictures) on multiple devices
3. Transcoding for devices that don't support all formats.
4. Lots of space for all my media
5. Ease of setup and use, I don't want this to get bogged down into a major time sink project or become annoying to maintain if possible.
6. Gonna try to use PLEX as my main media server
I was considering going with the Synology 412+, but I know the CPU can not do transcoding of 1080 and barely 720 otherwise it seems like a great choice. So I am considering using my spare parts to build a Win7 or Win 8 box as a server and run PLEX on that. I would then point the PC server at the NAS (currently WHS, hopefully soon the 412+) and have the files reside on the NAS. Basically the PC would be for PLEX only and all other needs would come from the NAS. I am hoping this would make this easy to use and maintain, all user management, access, etc on the NAS and only PLEX running off the server.
I think my concerns are. 1) best parts to finish PC server build out, and 2) will the PC server be able to pull files from the NAS over Cat5e fast enough to stream maybe 2 1080p movies with transcoding?
Here is what I have lying around already put together:
1. Q9650 quad-core CPU
2. GIGABYTE GA-X48-DQ6 Motherboard
3. G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1000 memory
4. Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme Heatsink with 120mm fan
Looking for any and all advice or suggestions. Thanks!!!!
